How to Import Jaggery from India: Documentation, Regulations & Process

Grihvaa Export Team 9 min read Import, Documentation, Compliance

Importing jaggery from India for the first time can look complicated — multiple certificates, regulatory approvals, and customs procedures across different countries. This guide breaks it down clearly so you know exactly what to expect and what to ask your Indian exporter for.

Step-by-Step Import Process

1

Identify a Certified Exporter

Verify the exporter holds an APEDA RCMC (Registration-cum-Membership Certificate), FSSAI Central License, and IEC (Import Export Code). These three are non-negotiable for any credible jaggery exporter from India.

2

Agree on Product Specifications

Specify product type (slab/powder/cubes), grade, moisture level, sucrose content, packaging, and labelling requirements. Request a sample shipment before placing a bulk order.

3

Sign a Proforma Invoice

The Proforma Invoice confirms price, quantity, payment terms (T/T, LC, DP), and Incoterms (FOB, CIF, CFR). This document initiates the trade and is used to arrange your Letter of Credit if needed.

4

Exporter Prepares Shipment & Documents

The exporter arranges production, quality testing, packaging, and container loading — then prepares the full export documentation set.

5

Customs Clearance in Your Country

Your customs broker files the Bill of Entry in your country using the documents provided. Jaggery HS code is typically 1701.13 (cane sugar). Import duty varies by country.

Required Export Documents

A complete jaggery export shipment from India requires the following documents. Ask your exporter for all of these before or at the time of shipment:

Important for UAE Buyers

Dubai Municipality requires a specific Food Import Declaration for all food consignments. Your UAE-based customs broker or freight forwarder will handle this, but ask your Indian exporter to include the FSSAI certificate and CoA in the shipment documents to avoid delays at Jebel Ali port.

For jaggery, sea freight is almost always preferred for commercial quantities. A standard 20-foot container holds approximately 18–20 metric tonnes of jaggery in 25kg bags. LCL (Less than Container Load) is available for smaller orders of 1–5 MT.
